University of Maryland Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Programs

The Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) program strives to ensure that all Maryland residents are healthy and economically successful at every stage of life. The University of Maryland Extension FCS team works with youth and families to prevent and manage chronic diseases through resources and programming around healthy food and physical activity choices, safe food handling, and financial and health insurance literacy.

UME Food, Nutrition, and Health FCS programs provide research-based education on nutrition, healthy lifestyles, chronic disease prevention, food safety, and home food preservation.

Community Collaborations in Allegany County

Local Agencies: UME provides train-the-trainer education in local agencies, including HRDC, Hope Station, and the Maryland Food Bank, encouraging staff and customers to make healthy food choices, develop food preparation skills, handle food safely, improve shopping skills, and increase physical activity.

Food Pantries: Collaboration with UME supports distributing fresh produce and pantry staples delivered to mobile food drops at several locations. Host agencies have included Hope Station, St John’s/Arch St, Mt Savage Fire Hall, Bruce Outreach Center, Flintstone UMC, and First Wesleyan/Cresaptown.

Farmer's Markets: UME supports the work of the Allegany County Farmers’ Market Association and provides nutritional education, recipes, and resources at local Farmers’ Markets. Summer programming for children is offered in downtown Cumberland and at the City Place and Frostburg locations.

Financial Wellness

The University of Maryland Extension Financial Wellness program offers resources to help individuals and families develop budgeting skills, manage credit, build savings, and work toward financial goals.
