Farmers Market

Farmers markets are vital outlets for local food and farm products. Garrett County is lucky to have a farmer-run, producer-only farmers market held in Oakland twice weekly in summer and on select Saturdays indoors in winter. The market accepts SNAP/EBT benefits through the Maryland Market Money program.

Garrett Growers

Local fresh produce farmers work together to plan, plant, harvest and distribute local foods to area restaurants, grocers, and through a weekly Veggie Box program. The Garrett Growers Cooperative partners with other local food distributors in the region to help get local foods to their neighbors.

Vegetable & Fruits

ripe strawberry ready to be picked

Strawberries are available in grocery stores 365 days a year. This is largely due to the fact that berries are shipped from different locations across the United States and around the world. However, in the eastern United States, fresh, locally-grown strawberries are only available at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and grocery stores for several weeks during the late spring and early summer. This limited availability occurs mostly because the commercial strawberry production in the East is derived from June-bearing varieties, which have a brief production season.
