2022 is the Year of Soil Health

Stop treating soil like dirt! This year in the Master Gardener Grow It Eat It program, we are celebrating the resource that supports all life on earth - soil.

Soil is mostly hidden from us making it easy to overlook and undervalue. Since soils make all plant and animal life possible on Mother Earth it makes sense for us to take good care of them. The Home and Garden Information Center and Maryland Master Gardener Program are committed to helping Marylanders learn more about soil and become better stewards of the land. Soil health is defined as “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans.” USDA NRCS
