What is Environmental Justice in Agriculture
Environmental justice means making sure that no one suffers more than others from pollution, especially communities near farms, waste treatment, or factories. This includes how odors, noise, chemicals, or even lighting affect the land, air, and water around them.We heard about a variety of issues related to agricultural waste management pollution during our interviews across the Eastern Shore, including odors and noise from farm operations and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) management, and high nitrate levels in local soil and water.
Why it Matters (For Farmers, Families & Communities
- Some communities are more affected than others by waste pollution
- Odors, noise, and chemicals from farms can cause health issues
- Decisions about where waste facilities go should be fair to everyone
