In the horse project members can learn about breeds of horses, understand horse health, nutrition, and grooming, understand breeding and genetics, learn about diseases and health care, design a horse health program and explore the financial side of showing horses.

Horse Safety Orientations - Any 4-H member participating in their first year of showing at the Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair MUST attend 1 horse safety orientation.  Watch the 4-H Tribune for dates of these orientations.

Horse and Pony ID Cards - All 4-Her's who plan on exhibiting a horse/pony, must submit a Horse and Pony ID Card for each horse/pony that they may show. Horse and Pony ID Cards are due to the Carroll County Extension Office by May 31st.

Horse Lease - If you are planning to lease a horse/pony for the year, you must complete a Performance Animal Lease and Release form. Forms are due at the same time as your Horse/Pony ID on May 31st.

Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair - For more information on the rules and regulations of the Carroll County 4-H Horse Shows, please go to www.carrollcountyfair.com. Each department will have their set of rules/regulations for this year’s fair posted.

Additional Opportunities -

  • Horse Bowl - A knowledge based contest focusing on different aspects of horse knowledge.  Horse bowl practices normally start the beginning on January on Wednesday nights. The state horse bowl competition is held in March.
  • Horse Judging - An opportunity to learn how to judge and place classes of horses.  Practices start up after Horse Bowl on Wednesday nights.  Practices are held at the Extension Office and then you will start meeting at horse farms around Carroll County for hands-on live practices.  A state horse judging contest is normally held in May/June.
  • Horse Communication - Share your knowledge on horses through the communication contest. Several areas to participate in from speeches to demonstrations, which include individual and team divisions.
