UME's Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) program provides research-based education and technical assistance to help individuals, communities, and organizations conserve and manage Maryland's natural resources. Programs focus on protecting water quality, supporting healthy ecosystems, promoting sustainable landscapes, and increasing resilience to environmental challenges.

Montgomery County Extension offers a variety of exciting initiatives in the field of Environment and Natural Resources, including the Master Gardener Program, watershed protection and restoration, home gardening, and more. Montgomery County Environment & Natural Resource Programs

Master Gardener Program

The University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener Program is a volunteer initiative that teaches local residents about safe, effective, and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. Montgomery County Extension office also offers horticulture services.

Volunteers receive 40 hours of classroom, hands-on, and virtual instruction in their county of residence so that they can then teach community members through workshops, presentations, demonstrations, and more.

Sea Grant Watershed Protection & Restoration Program

The Extension Sea Grant program integrates scientific research, education, and public outreach. Guided by a strategic plan, Sea Grant works to develop sound ideas and practices that enhance the health of the Chesapeake Bay and support the businesses and jobs that depend on it.

The UME Watershed Protection and Restoration Program works to improve water quality through stormwater management, restoration practices, and climate‑resilience strategies. Staff collaborates with local and state governments, watershed groups, and community organizations to:

  • Build partnerships
  • Identify funding opportunities
  • Support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of restoration projects
