Harford County Master Gardener Program

UME's Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) program provides research-based education and technical assistance to help individuals, communities, and organizations conserve and manage Maryland's natural resources. Programs focus on protecting water quality, supporting healthy ecosystems, promoting sustainable landscapes, and increasing resilience to environmental challenges.

Harford County Master Gardeners is a volunteer program that supports the UME mission by educating residents about safe, effective, and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. Harford County Extension staff offer a variety of initiatives in the field of Environment and Natural Resources, including workshops, demonstrations, community partnerships, volunteer programs, and technical resources. Pollen-Aiders

Become a Pollen-Aider in Harford County!

HLT is working with the Harford County Master Gardeners on their Pollen-Aiders Program. Pollen-Aiders are Master Gardener members who educate communities about pollinators, pollinators’ unique relationships with plants, and pollinator-friendly garden techniques. Between mid-May and mid-October, you may request a Pollen-Aider to visit your garden to see if it meets all the criteria to be certified as a pollinator-friendly garden. Once your garden meets all the criteria for a pollinator-friendly garden, you will receive a certification sign!

Sea Grant Watershed Protection and Restoration

Maryland Sea Grant Extension Watershed Restoration Specialists offer technical advice and support to individuals and communities working to preserve and restore the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland’s coastal waters. 

UME Watershed Restoration Specialists facilitate measurable reductions in water pollution in the following ways: 

  • Facilitating classes and workshops to teach homeowners how to improve water quality in their own backyard with practices like rain barrels, rain gardens, and tree planting
  • Technical assistance programs to help communities address Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) regulations and requirements
  • Connecting watershed science to the policymakers and community leaders making water quality decisions.
