Caroline County Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

The University of Maryland Extension Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) program strives to ensure that all Maryland residents are healthy and economically successful at every stage of life through education, research, and outreach programs. We help people acquire knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to make informed decisions that affect their health and economic well-being. We help them identify health risks and then make a plan to reduce those risks. We accomplish this by working with youth and families to prevent and manage chronic diseases through healthy food and physical activity choices, handling food safely, teaching financial and health insurance literacy, and creating safe and healthy places to live, work, play, and learn.

Financial Wellness

Being Money Smart: Being a smart consumer means learning what you can so that you are prepared to make smart choices-- whether you are making a purchase, saving money toward a goal, improving your credit, using a budget/spending plan, or learning new habits that will help you manage your money.

UME's Financial Wellness programs provide resources to help individuals and families develop budgeting skills, manage credit, build savings, and work toward financial goals. Read more.

Food, Nutrition, and Health

UME's Food, Nutrition, and Health programs offer research-based education on nutrition, healthy lifestyles, chronic disease prevention, food safety, and home food preservation. Learn more.

Being Health Smart:  Learning about ways to create a healthy home environment can improve your health and that of your family members; Healthy Homes programs can help you to learn ways to keep your home dry, clean, pest-free, safe, contaminant-free, well-maintained, and properly ventilated. Other programs address household chemical safety, making and using "greener cleaners", and awareness of poison look-alikes.
