Who doesn’t want to garden at the beach?
Master Gardeners working on the project at Sandy Point State Park, do so within sight of where sand meets the Chesapeake Bay. The project is based in the South Beach area of the park, which recently underwent a major restoration. During that time, 230 native trees, 365 native shrubs and almost 8,000 native perennials were planted!
In this beautiful environment, our goal is to promote the importance of native plants and conservation gardening in support of Maryland pollinators and wildlife. As a brand new project, we’ve spent much of our first year building relationships and learning the ropes of operating a project within a very busy state park. We’ve also adopted the pollinator gardens in the South Beach Plaza, developed identification and educational signage, began work on a native plant walk, and started planning a new Master Gardener demonstration area. But this is only the beginning. We have so many plans for the future!
