New Updates to the Nutrient Management Program
University of Maryland Extension (UME) has launched an enhanced nutrient management planning process designed to adapt to modern farming practices and operations that better align with Maryland’s agricultural regulations and environmental goals. Moving forward, UME will now administer and coordinate statewide nutrient management planning following the finalization of the agreement between the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) and the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
The Charles County Extension Office is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; no appointment is required.

Position Announcements
Agent Associate (AGNR-UME-Charles)
This is a full-time position that will work in support of the Charles County Home Horticulture Extension Program. The Faculty Extension Educator will administer all aspects of the Charles County horticulture program which includes coordination and programmatic support for home horticulture activities in Charles County, including training and management of Master Gardener Volunteers, collaboration on educational programs among partners, outreach to clientele, and related activities. The position will be located in the Charles County Extension Office in Bel Alton, Maryland.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, conduct, and evaluate educational seminars, classes, workshops, and other presentations related to home horticulture.
- Create educational products based on stakeholder needs including fact sheets and other publications, and other content for social media and websites (blogs, videos and pod casts, etc.)
- Coordinate the Master Gardener Program in Charles County which includes volunteer recruitment, training, supervision and coordination of community-based projects.
- Respond to clientele requests via phone, office visits, email, etc., for general horticulture information pertaining to lawn care, landscape plants and trees, composting, native plants, pest control, and other subject related to home horticulture, providing appropriate literature and advice in a timely and professional manner. (This may be done in consultation with the local Agricultural agent.)
- Identify plants, insects, and other horticulture samples submitted by clientele and respond with information and recommendations in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide pest control and fertilizer recommendations in accordance with University of Maryland guidelines.
- Disseminate horticulture information to county residents through news releases, website updates, etc.
- Assist in collecting, reporting and evaluating impact data of local home horticulture programs in accordance with funding requirements and UMD/UME policies and protocols.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community and other relevant organizations to implement and evaluate programs, and seek new partnerships, especially to reach traditionally underserved or marginalized audiences to deliver outreach education.
- Collaborate with other UME field- and campus-based faculty and staff on programs and projects of mutual interest when and where appropriate.
- Participate in committees and other service opportunities at the county, state and University level.

Faculty Specialist, Agricultural Nutrient Management Program Director
The Agricultural Nutrient Management Program (ANMP) Director works collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Agriculture and Food Systems Extension (AgFS) to provide leadership for the ANMP which is dedicated to delivering education, research, and plan writing services in the field of agricultural nutrient management throughout Maryland.
Responsibilities Include:
- Oversee and coordinate ANMP proposal and budget development, program management, and facilitate both interagency and inter-college collaborations to enhance the capacity of the University of Maryland to provide nutrient management education and services.
- Coordinate and develop the annual ANMP plan of work and budget in accordance with guidelines from the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), within university policies and ANMP goals.
- Strategically plan for ongoing ANMP development and innovative growth including working with University of Maryland Extension (UME) administration, and federal, state, and local community partners.
- Develop and adapt systems for ANMP fiscal management that comply with MDA and EPA guidelines.
- Develop ANMP procedures in accordance with university policies and MDA guidelines, and communicate these policies to campus, county, and state stakeholders and educators for reporting, program development, fiscal management, and supervision of personnel.
- Collaborate with the AgFS Assistant Director to develop the required reports for MDA, EPA, and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with AgFS faculty and staff to develop statewide program design, delivery, and outcomes.
- Supervise ANMP nutrient management specialists and advisors to provide nutrient management training and services.
- Provide daily management of the ANMP office staff on strategies for ongoing support to university and county ANMP efforts in program management, evaluation and reporting, proposal development, training, and growth.
- Coordinate and implement ANMP hiring procedures developed in coordination with College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) Human Resources (and update when necessary) and serve as the Hiring Authority for all ANMP faculty and staff hires.
- Coordinate ANMP evaluation systems and impact assessment by ensuring that ANMP evaluation plans are aligned with MDA and EPA requirements, and UME goals, reporting systems, and impact teams.
- Collaborate with the AgFS Assistant Director, the ANMP Advisory Council, and the ANMP team to develop a marketing plan to communicate ANMP impact to the university community, Extension colleagues, MDA, EPA, and program partners and stakeholders.
- Assist nutrient management advisors and specialists with engaging and providing service to socially disadvantaged and underrepresented farmers.
- Oversee United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Management Evaluation reviews.

Location - Charles County is on the Southern Maryland peninsula. It is bordered by Prince George's County to the north, St. Mary's County to the south, Calvert County to the east and the Potomac River to the west. It is 30 miles south of Washington, 61 miles southwest of Baltimore and 96 miles north of Richmond.
From MD Interstate 95...take exit 7 Branch Avenue South towards Waldorf; Branch Avenue will turn into Crain Highway (Route 301 South); Follow Crain Highway into Charles County. Once across County Line go approximate 17 miles. We will be on the right in the Historic Bel Alton High School, near mile-marker 10.
