University of Maryland Extension

Under the direction from Jim Hanson, Associate Dean and Associate Director of University of Maryland Extension, regarding UME COVID-19, County Office Faculty and Staff will be teleworking until July 17, 2020. For the health and safety of our communities, the University of Maryland Extension will extend the suspension of all in-person MG and 4-H events, practices, club meetings, and programs until further notice. Both time frames will continue to be re-evaluated as we receive new information and directives from government and health officials, as well as UMD campus administration.

There is still so much that is unknown and we are working diligently to assess our spring and summer programming. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these complex decisions together. We hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy.

We'd like to introduce you to a remarkable office located in the heart of St. Mary's County, where you can obtain useful, practical, up-to-date information on many subjects. It's called the University of Maryland Extension, St. Mary's County Office, and it acts as a county-wide educational system. It's sponsored jointly by the University of Maryland, St. Mary's County Government, and the U. S. Department of Agriculture; and has access to many of the University of Maryland's resources.

Our office services families with home horticulture and a Master Gardener volunteer program, diet, nutrition, parenting skills, consumer education, and food safety education. We serve our youth with 4-H clubs, school enrichment, healthy lifestyles, camping, leadership development, and our farmers, landscapers, and nursery enterprises facts about raising crops and livestock, protecting the environment, animal and crop diagnostics, marketing farm products, farm and business management, pest management, and alternative agriculture.
