Rain Barrels and Cisterns
Definition Rain barrels and cisterns are collection containers placed at the end of downspouts to collect rooftop runoff and store it for later use. Collecting rooftop runoff helps to reduce the volume of stormwater runoff leaving an area. Decreasing runoff minimizes the risk of flooding and erosion, helps recharge groundwater, and decreases pollution in waterways.
