Conversion from Turfgrass to Conservation Landscaping

Definition Conversion from Turfgrass to Conservation Landscaping is a practice that replaces sections of turfgrass with native plants. Established gardens provide greater water infiltration, habitat and soil stabilization than turfgrass. Native plants can also reduce or eliminate the need for pesticides and fertilizers. This practice reduces the volume of stormwater runoff leaving an area. Decreasing runoff minimizes the risk of flooding and erosion, helps recharge groundwater, and decreases pollution in waterways. In addition to stormwater management benefits, this practice promotes and preserves native species, provides wildlife habitat, improves air quality, and enhances community aesthetics.
