Conversion from impervious to turf/conservation landscaping
Definition
Conversion from Impervious to Turf/Conservation Landscaping involves removing impervious surfaces and replacing them with pervious or permeable surfaces such as a yard, garden, or conservation landscape that allow rainwater to soak into the ground. Examples include eliminating sidewalk squares to plant trees or replacing paved areas in the right-of-way with turf or a native plant garden. This practice reduces the volume of stormwater runoff leaving an area. Decreasing runoff minimizes the risk of flooding and erosion, helps recharge groundwater, and decreases pollution in waterways. In addition to stormwater management benefits, this practice promotes and preserves native species, provides wildlife habitat, improves air quality, and enhances community aesthetics.
