Did you know you can workout at an outdoor gym in Washington County, Maryland? Safely teach your kids how to ride their bikes on a protected trike track in Montgomery County? Play disc golf in Charles County? Hike along the shores of the Chesapeake in Queen Anne’s County?

Maryland is a beautiful state with lots of FREE opportunities for physical activity and recreation. As part of the release of The Secret to an Extraordinary Day storybook, SNAP-Ed has put together a list of unique, free places, events, and programs across the state to help your family get moving this summer.

The list is just a taste–there are many more parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, recreation programs, walking paths, and story trails to explore. Your county or town’s recreation and parks department is a great place to start looking for more places to be active.

Are you following us on Facebook and Instagram? We’re posting local highlights calling attention to favorite physical activity locations shared by our SNAP-Ed educators. Look for highlights in your county and take your family to go visit one of the local highlights yourselves!

As you explore new spaces and places to be active, don’t forget the Extraordinary Adventure Passport. Check off the activities right on your computer, or print it and complete it by hand. Try to complete each activity four times…but doing each one once is an achievement! Once you’ve completed your passport, visit go.umd.edu/active-fun to receive a prize! Look for the button on the site to get your Extraordinary Party Package.

We want to hear about your family’s extraordinary adventures. If you’ve discovered a new way or place for your family to be active, snap a photo, shoot a quick video, or just jot down a note and send it to eatsmartmd@umd.edu. Or post it to Facebook or Instagram and tag @eatsmartmd and #extraordinaryday.
