The fall harvest is just around the corner. While you may be sad to see less summer squash, melons, and berries, get ready for fresh apples, pumpkins, and loads of other fall vegetables. Shopping at the farmers’ market is a great way to purchase fresh produce to make healthy meals and snacks with your family, while supporting local farmers. Farmers’ markets are open during the week and weekend, usually through the end of October or November depending on the location, and are a great way to have a safe and socially distanced outing.

Did you know that many of the farmers’ markets in Maryland accept SNAP/EBT, P-EBT, and FMNP benefits? Participating markets will also give you free Maryland Market Money and match $10 to $20 when you spend your SNAP/EBT benefits at the farmers’ market. Head to your local farmers’ market this week and visit the market manager’s tent to learn more about doubling your SNAP/EBT benefits.

Here’s some seasonal produce to look out for at your local farmers’ market this fall:

  • Apples: There are more than 10 different apple varieties in Maryland. Try a McIntosh apple with our Microwaved Baked Apple recipe!
  • Pumpkins: Spice up your popcorn with some pumpkin seeds in a seed salad.
  • Winter Squash: look out for acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash.  Make Holiday Roasted Butternut Squash and add your own favorite herbs and spices.
  • Broccoli: Try adding steamed broccoli on top of your baked potato with our Broccoli Baked Potato recipe.
