Causes of saltwater intrusion

Saltwater intrusion is the landward movement of sea salts, which can occur in advance of sea level rise and coastal flooding, as salty waters move through both surface and groundwaters. Saltwater intrusion and the salinization of upland areas are caused by: (1) subsidence and sea level rise; (2) storms and tides; (3) drought; (4) water management; (5) connectivity of the landscape.
