Life cycle

Perennial from a basal rosette; has a taproot

Growth habit

Basal rosette similar to dandelion; leaves lanceolate, toothed, and rough on the upper and lower surface; erect, wiry branching stems grow up to 3 ft. high and carry bright blue, ray flowers 1 inch across; only a few flowers open at a time and flowers last only one day, opening early morning and closing as the sun increases intensity.

Reproduction

By seed; the average plant produces about 3000 seeds

Conditions that favor growth

Open, well-drained, unmanaged areas

Cultural control

Will regrow after mowing but not after deep tillage.
