2022 St. Mary's County Farm to School

In October, we celebrated another year of Farm to School at Green Holly and Town Creek Elementary Schools.  The farm-to-school program encompasses many activities—before the event students review curriculum about agriculture, the environment and healthy eating in the classroom and the day of the event students enjoy lunch made from local products purchased from farmers in St. Mary’s County. The highlight of the day are four outside exhibits focused on: animal agriculture, crop based agriculture, nutrition/healthy eating and value added agriculture.  Students visit each “station” for 15-20 minutes where interactive, hands-on lessons are conducted by local farmers, 4-H members and volunteers, Extension staff, parents, and SMCPS Food and Nutrition Services. Sponsored by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland State Department of Education in conjunction with local partners, the Farm to School program “works to bring more Maryland-grown products to school lunches with the aim of educating students about where their food comes from, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet”.  A big thank you to all the school system, farmers and volunteers who make this event possible.
