Last spring, Maryland SNAP-Ed began distributing of copies of The Secret to an Extraordinary Day, a storybook about a family who discovers the magic of moving your body through an unexpected adventure.
The book has been on an adventure of its own! First, books were given to students at SNAP-Ed schools throughout the state. Students from the mountains of Garrett County to the shores of Worcester County received the book at school. They were encouraged to read it with their families, and complete the Adventure Passport throughout the summer.
The book’s next stop was WIC clinics. Maryland WIC requested thousands of books to distribute to clients during their counseling visits. Mothers of young children can read the book to their children in English or Spanish, inspiring their family to be active every day in ways that work for them.
Finally, The Secret made its way to summer meal sites. Providers of free summer meals requested books to give to students. Sites were encouraged to use passport activities to get students moving while on site.
Have you read the book? Everyone can view it here, and complete the Extraordinary Adventure Passport. Once you’ve completed your passport, visit go.umd.edu/active-fun to receive a prize! Look for the button on the site to get your Extraordinary Party Package.
As summer draws to a close, let’s take the spirit of the Extraordinary Day into fall, winter, and beyond! Physical activity puts a smile on your face and some pep in your step all year long. Just find your favorite ways to move!
