2. How to Register and track miles as a Group

Walk MD! for Individual Walkers

Walk MD! is a great way to challenge yourself to maintain or increase your physical activity level. See how long it takes you to “walk” the 500 mile trail across our state! You can log miles by engaging in a variety of types of physical activity and using our Exercise Equivalents Chart  or on-line calculator to easily convert minutes of activity into miles walked.

Step 1:

  • Register online by clicking on the Registration/Login button on the Walk MD! home page.

  • Choose to walk as an Individual walker and fill out the registration form. You will create a user name and password during registration. Please note: Individual Walkers must be 18 years of age or over. If you are a minor and wish to walk the trail, you must use the group registration form and have a parent or guardian act as your group leader and read and acknowledge acceptance of the Parental Release and Consent Form on your behalf.

  • Once you are registered, you can log in using your user name and password to access the interactive map that will track your progress around the state trail.

Step 2:

Track your daily activities and convert them into miles. Print the WalkMD! Activity Log if you wish to record your activities and time engaged before converting to miles and entering them on the interactive map.

Step 3:

Periodically total your miles “walked”  for walking and other activities and enter them by logging in to the Walk MD! interactive map. The map will automatically keep track of your miles. As soon as you submit them, you will receive information on how far you have gone, how far till you reach the next milestone, and how far you have to go to finish the trail.

Milestones are specific locations along the trail. We encourage you to click on the websites of these milestone locations to find out about our state’s natural and historical resources. Better yet, take a field trip and a visit one or more to explore, discover and really Walk MD!

Step 4:

Once you have finished the trail, the website will take you to a page where you can:

  • fill out a survey (coming soon; thank you!);

  • keep “walking!" Your group can re-walk the state trail or (coming soon) choose a Maryland County trail. In either case, you will complete a new registration form to begin.

Walk MD! for Groups

Walk MD! is a great way to encourage a group (school class, 4H club, weight management class, etc. ) to increase physical activity levels. Challenge your group to “walk” the 500 mile trail across our state! Group Leaders will register the group and encourage members to engage in physical activities individually or lead group activities to accumulate miles. Group miles are added together and the group moves along the trail as a unit.

What a Group Leader does:
--Organizes a group and explains the challenge
--Selects a name for the team (optional)
--Collects registration information from team members
--Prints, distributes, and collects and holds release and consent forms for all group members,
   including group leader
--Registers the group and enters information for team on Walk MD! website
--Tallies group miles and inputs them to the on-line, interactive map
--Prints certificates of recognition for team members at completion of trail
