Beginning farmer class series:

Starting a small, intensive, commercial farm for local markets

This ten-week series meets Tuesday nights from late January through March and is meant to be an introduction at a basic level to a variety of important farming topics, including soil science, marketing, pest management, farm finances, food safety, crop rotation and livestock. Extension educators and specialists from across Maryland teach intro-level classes and we partner with Future Harvest CASA to bring in experienced farmers to share their practical knowledge.

The 2019 course will start on Tuesday, January 22 and will be held in Baltimore, MD.

Urban Farmers Winter Meeting

It is a tradition in Extension to partner with local farmers' associations to organize an annual winter farmers' meeting, where farmers can socialize with their peers and brush up their knowledge and skills. In Baltimore we partnered with Farm Alliance of Baltimore to offer an annual Urban Farmers regional winter meeting on a Sunday afternoon in January.

The 2019 Urban Farmers' Winter Meeting will be held Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2019.

Food entrepreneur training:

Food for ProfitFood for Profit is a one-day workshop designed to help you work through the maze of local and state regulations, food safety issues, and business management concepts that all must be considered in setting up a commercial food business. This session of Penn State Extension’s popular course has been specifically adapted to Maryland’s food production regulations, food entrepreneurial resources, and marketing opportunities. We try to offer this session annually in both Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
