Food Supplement Nutrition Education (FSNE)

Rena Brooks is the Food Supplement Nutrition Education (FSNE) Project Leader and Educator for the Mid-Shore which covers Queen Anne’s and Caroline Counties. Rena provides nutrition education to low-income individuals and families to help them make healthy food and behavior choices. FSNE also provides nutrition education training to volunteers and professionals who provide services to low-income families to expand the reach of the program.

2018 Program:  Greens and Greenery for Greensboro Elementary  [1]

The primary goals of FSNE are:

  • Increase Fruit and Vegetable consumption
  • Use MyPlate to make food choices
  • Increase time spent in physical activity and reduce time spent in sedentary behaviors
  • Stretch food dollars through smart shopping strategies.

FSNE has 5 core teaching initiatives:

  • Farm to Family [2]
  • Healthy Changes for Out of School Youth [3]
  • Healthy School Communities [4]
  • Healthy Tots, Healthy Families [5]
  • Securing Food Resources for Families [6]

Currently, Rena is teaching and training in-school, after-school and head start program staff on: Read for Health & Edible ABC’s [7], Growing Healthy Habits [8], Teen Cuisine [9], Market to Mealtime [10] & M2M Kids [11], 1-2-3 Feed Me, [12] Cooking Matters at the Store [13], Healthy Cents [14], Grow-it-Try-it-Like-it [15], Refresh [16], Feeding for Healthy Eating [17], Dig In [18], Nutrition to Go, [19] and Champions for Healthy Kids [20]. The goals and objectives for Maryland’s SNAP Education program are based off of key behavioral outcomes identified by the USDA Food and Nutrition Services and align with multiple levels of the Social Ecological Model to incorporate Policy, Systems and Environmental change. The Midshore FSNE program also participates in: Smarter Lunchrooms trainings [21], funding School Garden programs [22], paying local farmers to speak at schools [23], Maryland’s Home Grown School Lunch week events [24], and School Wellness committees [25].
