Starting a Second Career in Local Food – Commercial Food Production and Marketing for the New Farmer on Small Acreage

Classes will be held at the University of Maryland Extension Office in Derwood Maryland, Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:45 on the following dates:

  • January 14 - Farming Options in the region. Getting to know others in the business.
  • January 21 - What Have We Learned, A Forum With Our Producers.
  • January 28 - Equipment Roundup. Let’s Learn About Equipment (Part 1) - A Discussion on tractors, fuel types, hitch systems, and equipment needed to farm. Farm Safety will be discussed.
  • February 4 - Equipment Roundup. Let’s Learn About Equipment (Part 2) - A Discussion on tractors, fuel types, hitch systems, and equipment needed to farm. Farm Safety will be discussed.
  • February 11 - Marketing Options. Are there new locations to market your products? Farmers Markets, Direct Wholesale, CSA’s and other ideas.
  • February 18 - Cover Crops for All Seasons. What can we use, winter, summer and in between crops.
  • February 25 - Soils and Soils Management- Nutrient Management, Nutrient Sources. Short term and long term nutrient needs.
  • March 3 - Season Extension Technologies. – Local farmers
  • March 10 - Small Ruminant Production- Sheep and Goats
  • March 17 - Poultry Production- Basics
  • March 24 - GAPS- Where are we now?
  • March 31 - Snow Day Makeup
