“There is just not enough time in the day!”  How many times have you said this same thing?  Whether we are working or playing, most of us would agree that time is precious and there never seems to be enough of it.

The good news is we find ourselves at the start of a leap year!  Every four years, February has 29 days instead of 28 so that our calendar year stays in sync with the solar year.  (parents.highlights.com)

2024 has a whole extra 24 hours on the last day of February.  Why not make the most of this extra day by planning something to celebrate this very special gift of time? Here are some fun ideas to make this February 29th the time of your life!

SPEND TIME TOGETHER

Spending time with loved ones is a great way to make the most of February 29th! We could all use some extra time with friends and family, so reach out today and make a date with that someone special.  Set aside some time with your child, spouse, best friend, or someone that needs a little extra boost like a neighbor.  Planning a get together will give you both something to look forward to all month long.

COOK TOGETHER

Plan a favorite meal together.  Keep it healthy by trying a new recipe from our Eat Smart website. If cooking for the whole family, include the kids in the planning and prep.  Set a timer and try to prepare the meal in 29 minutes or try to eat everything on your plate in 29 bites.   Leap year can also create  interesting dinner conversations.  Adults, share what you were doing 29 years ago and kids can imagine how life might change when they are four years older.  Look up some leap year trivia and quiz the family while having dinner together.

MOVE TOGETHER

Plan activities as a family that get your body moving.  Use this opportunity to discuss the importance of balancing work and play in our daily lives.  Plan to work together on a task (like cleaning up the playroom) for 29 minutes before switching to play time for 29 minutes!  Choose basketball in the driveway, set up an obstacle course in the yard, take a 29 minute walk or visit a playground for 29 minutes. Each evening let a different family member choose an activity to enjoy together for 29 minutes!  Don’t forget to incorporate a little “leapfrog” into your play as you celebrate your extra time together!

GIVE TOGETHER

Consider giving to others in your Leap Year plans.  Simple tasks such as sending a card or a text to someone can make such a special impact. Choose 29 people that your family can help during the month of February or simply make a goal each day to reach out to someone.  Report back to each other at the end of the day to share who you helped.  Keep a tally or a chart on the refrigerator to keep track.

Volunteer at a nursing home, animal shelter, or visit a lonely neighbor.  Bake or purchase some special treats. The special deliveries will surely brighten someone’s day!  Collect 29 gently used toys or household items for donation to a shelter or other agency.   Research and choose a charity meaningful to your family and donate $29.
