University of Maryland Extension hosts the 12th Annual Women in Agriculture Conference

On February 25-26th the 12th Annual Women in Agriculture conference was held at the Dover Downs, in Dover Delaware.  158 women from across the Agricultural business came together for two days of learning, networking and socializing.  Julie DeYoung, Perdue Spokesperson, kicked off the two day event with the message of “Putting the Family Back into Farming”.  Over lunch, Ginger Myers, Extension Marketing Specialist, spoke about the best ways to use social media for your business.  To end the first day Edwin Remsberg, photographer, discussed how to “tell a story through photos.”  Participants ended their day in the Diamond Lounge of Dover Downs watching Harness Racing and enjoying time spent with friends new and old.  Breakout sessions were plentiful throughout the two day conference providing the women with a chance to learn more about topics such as attracting song birds, planning for retirement, solar panels and returning to the farm.  The conference wrapped up with Edwin Kee, Delaware’s Secretary of Agriculture sharing photos and comments of “Agriculture Then and Now.”

New for the 2013 conference, Twitter was used throughout the conference to keep participants informed and engaged.  Breakout sessions were tweeted to the participants, along with updates on door prize winners.  Participants enjoyed the increase in social media as many were sharing Facebook posts or re-tweeting throughout the conference.

The conference is a collaborative regional conference with the University of Delaware Extension and Rutgers and was sponsored by the North East Center for Risk Management Education and the USDA Risk Management Agency.

Even though this conference has just drawn to a close, the Women In Agriculture Planning committee is already thinking about 2014!  We encourage all those who attended this year to bring a friend, and for those who have never attended a Women In Agriculture Conference, they are encouraged to come.  2014 will be all about welcoming back our past participants and meeting new friends.
