State 4-H Communications Contest - Results

Congratulations to the 114 youth who participated in the 2014 State 4-H Communications Contest as a part of the campus-wide Maryland Day Event. Each participant was a Champion in their county, so competition and presentations were outstanding.  

Thanks to all the families for heading to College Park and we're happy to announce the Champion and Reserve Champion in each of the following speaking categories.  

Radio Spots - this 30 second promotional spots were delivered to the audience on Ag Avenue under the AGNR Tent:  Junior Champion - Jacob Amon, Wicomico County and Junior Reserve Champion - Lauren Guernsey, Montgomery County.  Intermediate Champion - Dillon Young, Allegany County and Intermediate Reserve Champion - Savannah Dobbins, Calvert County.  Senior Champion - Christy Cusic, St. Mary’s County and Senior Reserve Champion - Carley Gray, Anne Arundel County.  Thanks Jacod for presenting your Radio Spot to the crowd at the Awards Presentation.          

Interpretive Speeches - dialogue from published works - were presented in the Plant Sciences Lecture Hall.  Junior Champion - Catherine Zellers, Montgomery County and Junior Reserve Champion - Jocelyn Amon, Wicomico County. Intermediate Interpretive Champion - Raisa Niederhelman. Montgomery County and Intermediate Reserve Champion - Jack Sien, Charles County.  Senior Interpretive Speech Champion - Sarah Giordano, Carroll County and Senior Reserve Champion - Sabrina Dobbins, Calvert County who gave her presentation impressing  the Awards Crowd!                

Extemporaneous Speeches are surprises to both the speakers and to the audience!  Contestants draw topics upon arrival at the contest and prepare their speeches on the spot!   Junior Champion - Daniel Truxel, Harford   and Ashylnn Conley, Queen Anne’s - Junior Reserve Champion.  Intermediate Champion - Trevor Babb, Montgomery County and Intermediate Reserve Champion - Grace Hughes, Anne Arundel County.  Senior Champion - Kirsten DiBastiani, Harford County and Reserve Champion - Maria McCulley, Talbot County. Thanks to Daniel Truxel for sharing his speech with the crowd -Great Job!

Most of us are familiar with Prepared Speeches - it's the speech that we give when called upon - a speech that we decide on the topic then "prepare" the speech.  Junior Prepared Speech Champion - Zachary Spurrier, Frederick County and Junior Reserve Champion - Gavra Goldie, Cecil County.  Intermediate Prepare Speech Champion - Doris Jimenez, Anne Arundel County and Intermediate Reserve Champion - Allison Dietz, Harford County.  Senior Prepared Champion - Anna Schuster, Howard County and Senior Reserve Champion - Anthony Yetzer, Cecil County.  Special Thanks to Josiah Manning who presented his Prepared Speech for the crowd in the Awards Tent.    

Every judge commented on the outstanding presentations and the difficulty of selecting a Champion and a Reserve Champion in each age category for the junior, intermediate and senior speakers!   Thank you speakers for sharing your Mastery of this essential Life Skill.
