Remote setting is a technique used to produce oyster seed that was developed in the Pacific Northwest of the United States in the late 1970=s and early 1980=s.
Remote setting has been successfully employed in the Chesapeake Bay since the mid 1980=s although production has been limited. University of Maryland and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Sea Grant Extension programs have worked with growers and community groups to use remote setting to produce seed for commercial and restoration purposes.
