CUMBERLAND, MD - University of Maryland Extension’s Allegany County Master Gardeners are now stewards of Little Free Library #89002, offering books on gardening, nature and healthy eating for the general public.

Little Free Library (LFL) is a free public book exchange that encourages a love of reading, and in this case, a love of gardening, by asking community members to “take a book, share a book” at their site. “The response of the public has been very encouraging. We currently have 45 books and over 100 magazines available through donations,” said Sherry Frick, Master Gardener coordinator in Allegany County. “I have found that people are delighted to donate their reference books. It makes them feel good that their books are getting a second chance and can benefit others, instead of sitting on their shelf collecting dust.”

The Master Gardener’s LFL structure has been established outside the University of Maryland Extension office at Naves Crossroads in Cumberland, but a mobile LFL bin will also travel with the Master Gardeners to local farmers markets.

“We take a mobile version of our LFL to the Cumberland Farmers Market every Thursday,” said Frick. “People are pleasantly surprised that we’re giving away these wonderful magazines and books.”

LFLs help neighborhoods build literacy through their free book-sharing movement. According to the Little Free Library website, there are over 90,000 registered LFL boxes in over 90 countries.

“I find that this is a great way to generate conversation about the Master Gardener program and Extension as a whole,” Frick said. “It promotes good will and helps bring our community closer together through the relationship building that takes place when people stop to look at our books and magazines.”

Donations of books related to gardening, herbs, landscaping, native plants, medicinal plants and other related topics are accepted and appreciated. For more information, contact UME Educator and Master Gardener Coordinator Sherry Frick at 301-724-3320 or
