The Wicomico County University of Maryland Extension team was awarded a 2019 Light of Literacy award by Wicomico Public Library, for their programming supporting traditional, financial and health literacy in the community.

According to the Light of Literacy website, the award recognizes “Luminaries whose actions demonstrate a deep understanding of the transformational power of literacy in the lives of those in our community.”

Karen Reddersen, Area Extension Director for Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore Extension offices, accepted the Organizational Luminary Award during an April 25 ceremony in Salisbury, Md. Extension was one of seven individual and organizational honorees for this year’s Light of Literacy Award.

An excerpt from the Organizational Luminary nomination form read, "Although it is generally known for the services and information it provides to the agricultural community, the Extension Service also offers a variety of programs that are beneficial to the greater community. These programs include 4-H Youth Development, which offers area young people hands-on learning experience in STEM activities such as robotics, aerospace, marine biology, geology, and climate science. Participants are also introduced to nutritional literacy essential to achieving a healthy lifestyle. Another important part of the Extension Service is Family and Consumer Sciences, offering stress management for those recovering from opioid addiction, and financial literacy classes for those entering or reentering the work force."

In addition to the honor, the Wicomico County Extension team also received six proclamations and citations from Governor Larry Hogan, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, The Maryland General Assembly, Wicomico County Council, and the City of Salsibury Council.
