The Maryland State Fair Division K - Dogs competition in obedience and fitting & showmanship was held August 22, 2013. Tailwagger club member, Joanna Cleaver, competed with her dog Jack, a mixed breed rescue dog.

They earned a Third place finish in "1st year Junior Beginner Novice Obedience" and a First place finish in "1st year Junior Novice Fitting & Showmanship."

Q: What was the State Fair dog show like?

A: It was fun. The judges were nice, and I’m really proud of Jack. At first I was really nervous, but once I got in the ring and started showing, I was fine.

Q: How did you prepare for the competition?

A: I took Jr. Handling classes at the Catoctin Kennel Club with Ms. Randi (Whitacre) for showmanship, and took obedience classes with Ms. Andrea (Cloutier) at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds and Ms. Sue‘s (Mahla) house. I also practiced at home.

Q: What did you learn from this experience?

A: I learned that there could be more advanced exercises, like Recall Off Lead and Long Sit Off Lead, and you should practice things even if you don’t think you’re going to have to do it.
