The Wheatland neighborhood has been an active farming community for decades, with multiple farms serving as a mainstay of sustainable agriculture in Northern Virginia. Join us for a "choose-your-tour" afternoon in the Wheatland neighborhood. The afternoon will begin with introductions at Moutoux Orchard, then break off into three separate tours of different operations, and finally reconvene for a potluck dinner. Tour options include:

Greenstone Fields grows specialty cut flowers and berries (that are often sold as cut flowers). On the tour, you will see how we utilize high tunnels to grow certain flowers that do not grow as well in the field. We will talk about our adventures with selling wholesale in the Washington/Baltimore area and marketing through local CSAs. There just may be some shiitake logs fruiting, too.

Moutoux Orchard is a year-round diverse full-diet farm. On the tour, you will see all aspects of how we rotationally graze our livestock and utilize animals in our vegetable fields and orchards. You will also see our small dairy herd and we will discuss our unpasteurized dairy operation. We can discuss our unique marketing as a full-diet CSA and the challenges and successes we have managing such a diverse farm through all the seasons.

Potomac Vegetable Farms is a two farm business that started over 50 years ago. At PVF West in Purcellville, we grow ecoganic vegetables on 10 acres, grow cover crops on 10 acres and make our own compost. Our business sells at 6 farmers markets, a 600 member CSA and 2 roadside stands. During the farm tour, we will talk about our business model and some of the key components of growing veggies here. You will visit the compost making pad and see our process, hear about cover crops and our favorite pieces of equipment.
