Arc Honors Terry Serio

Terry Serio, FSNE educator in Carroll County, was recently honored during the Arc’s 2013 Maryland Convention with the Arc Maryland’s Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is given to an outstanding volunteer in each chapter whose dedication is an inspiration to all who work with them.

Terry has been teaching Arc County clients for the last four years. She works with them during the Maryland growing season, from March through November, using the Growing Healthy Habits curriculum linking healthy eating behaviors to the garden harvest. In this gardening program, the clients start by working in the garden planting seeds, which they maintain and harvest. They prepare and taste the different fruits and veggies using healthy recipes and have nutrition lessons when they return from the garden each week. In addition, once a month throughout the year, Terry provides a nutrition education class that includes a food demonstration and tasting using food preparation skills appropriate for the Arc clients to enable them to prepare dishes and meals. Many of the ingredients used are the foods grown in the garden, some are used fresh, and others are dried or frozen for later use. Terry demonstrates food preparation skills and the clients replicate them and prepare the recipes under supervision.

Over the years, Terry has built a meaningful rapport with clients at The Arc Carroll County.

Congratulations Terry for your honor...and thank you for the work you do every day that resulted in this recognition.
