Ag Week at the Mall Schedule


The Frederick County Agriculture Week will be held on February 17-22, 2014 at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, Maryland with the theme of “Support Local Frederick County Farms”.  Many displays and events are being planned for this year and changes have been made to the schedule and times of events.  If you have any questions concerning Frederick County Ag Week, please contact Ted Albaugh at 240-446-3054 or at or Ronald Murphy at 301-788-3847 or at  Exhibits may be set up on Sunday, February 16, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. 

Activities currently planned are: 

Coloring contest – A coloring picture and entry form printed in the Frederick News Post.  Entries will be accepted on Sunday afternoon, February 16, 2014 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the FSK Mall Customer Service Desk (near Dairy Queen) and judging will take place on Monday and pictures will be displayed throughout the week.  Prizes will be awarded.  Categories are ages 2-4; 5-8 and 9-12.

4-H and FFA Displays - Registration forms for the 4-H and FFA poster, booth, and club display contest are due to the Extension Office by February 7th.  Registration forms can be found HERE.

Monday, February 17, 2014 – Ice Cream Making Contest – Registration will begin from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the entrance near DSW Shoes and churning will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Groups will need to supply their own hand crank freezer, floor covering, supplies, salt, ice, etc., along with a copy of the ice cream recipe for the judging. Groups will be required to clean up their area after churning.  The Frederick County Dairy Princess and Dairy Maids will be assisting with the ice cream churning.  Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 

Tuesday, February 18, 2014 – The Marcie Becker Cake and Pie Contest and Auction will be held on near center court.  Please bring your cake or pie to the center court at 6:00-6:30 p.m.  An auction of all baked items will start at 7:30 p.m.  John Roop of Roop Auction Service will serve as the auctioneer that evening.

Wednesday, February 19, 2014 – Mike Dickson of the Seeds of Life Nurseries will host a minute to win it contest beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the center court.  At 6:00 p.m., Michael Judd will have a lecture and book signing near center court and Old Line Events will present a seminar on farming with technology; and Seeds of Life Nurseries will present an urban agriculture seminar. 

Thursday, February 20, 2014 – the Frederick County 4-H Department will sponsor a “Trash-E” Fashion Show will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7:00pm with registration beginning at 6:30pm.  Class divisions will be; Individual, Pair, Group/Club, and Company/Business and garments will be made using “non-traditional” textiles (ie. cans, trash bags, cardboard, coffee filters, bubble wrap, Cds).  ONLY muslin is allowed to be used in garment creation, and is ONLY to be used for structural integrity.  Garments must be wearable and will be modeled on stage for judging.  Garments will be judged for use of non-traditional materials and artistic creativity.  Each division will be placed 1st – 6th and will be awarded ribbons.  Participation ribbons will also be awarded.  $10 will be awarded for the 1st place winner in each division.  Please complete an entry form to registration along with the completed garment and narration.  Forms can be found HERE.  If you have any questions, please contact Samantha Murdock at 301-600-3583 or

Friday, February 21, 2014 – Tentatively, the annual log sawing contest will be held at center court and one team from each local FFA Chapter will be allowed to participate.  Registration will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the contest will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Also, the Frederick County Dairy Princess Committee will be constructing a Giant Ice Cream Sundae that evening at Center Court.  Ice cream will be provided by South Mountain Creamery and the Frederick County Dairy Princess and Dairy Maids will be assisting with the construction.

On Saturday, the Frederick County Sheep Breeders Association will be having demonstrations from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and the Frederick County 4-H Entomology Club will be having a display of insects between 1:00-5:00 p.m. 

Saturday, February 22, 2014, a demonstration by Scales and Tails will be presented at 6:00 p.m. near the center court and the annual Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull will be held at 7:00 p.m. in front of the DSW store, with registration beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Many agriculture organizations and businesses will be having displays during Ag Week at the Mall and can display old scrapbooks, etc.  Donations from the fountain at center court during Ag Week at the Mall will go towards expenses of the Frederick County Ag Week at the Mall. 

All displays and exhibits must be submitted between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014, unless prior approval of the Ag Week Committee is received; any organizations bringing machinery should check with the Ag Week Committee on times and all exhibits MUST remain until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014.  No machinery exhibits will be removed until after the mall closes on Saturday, February 22, 2014.  Exhibits must be picked up by 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22 or they will be considered abandoned and removed from the property; all machinery exhibits must have plastic on the floor under the oil pan, and cardboard or carpet under the tires and jack.  NO STEEL WHEELS; booths and exhibits should be kept neat and clean all week.  The Chairman of each activity must make sure activities are cleaned up; no vehicles will be allowed in the mall unless approved by the Ag Week Committee and raffles must be approved by the Ag Week Committee and proper permits obtained.
