Youth Gardening

Vision: A future in which Montgomery County Youth have multiple opportunities to connect with nature, to develop a stewardship interest in the natural environment, and to realize that individual and group actions can impact our health and the health of the environment.

Mission: To provide students with an opportunity to develop organic gardening skills, prepare them to share their knowledge with others, and to foster the development of self-confidence, teamwork skills, scientific thought, responsibility, and an interest in healthy eating through a hands-on, curriculum-based gardening program.  Click here to see a video of the program.

Growing Forward Program Description: The garden is located in a densely developed neighborhood, surrounded by Title 1 Schools.  The garden encompassing just over 1000 sq.ft. is located at the bottom of the parking lot at the Recreation Center, in a very sunny location.  We have access to water at the community center, and a deer fence with a below ground barrier, hopefully keeps the garden safe from deer, groundhogs, and other burrowing animals.

We will be a part of the summer camp program at the center and will meet every Wednesday from 10:00AM-12:00PM with thirty 2nd and 3rd graders, to teach nutrition (following FSNE guidelines), garden with the children and send the harvested food home with these gardeners.
