Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

 2019 Free Tax Assistance Day

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation help to low- to moderate-income people. If your family earned $54,000 or less in 2018, you can receive FREE tax help and get your 2018 federal and state income tax returns done quickly through e-filing. 

University of Maryland Extension hosts one free income tax preparation day in partnership with Community Action Agency Montgomery County, the IRS, Maryland CASH, and Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS does not allow VITA to prepare taxes without required documentation.

  • Government issued ID (i.e., Valid Driver’s License, Passport, Age of Majority Card)
  • Social Security card (original not copy) or Individual Tax Identification Notice (ITIN) for each member of your family. (If you do not have ITINs, we will help you obtain one). (IRS mandates the SS card).
  • All W2 forms, forms 1098, 1099, and other documents regarding income.
  • If filing jointly, your spouse must be present.
  • Copy of last year’s tax return (if applicable).
  • Statement of annual child care expenses prepared by the provider, with their tax ID (Social Security or EIN number).
  • For direct deposit: proof of a bank account, including routing numbers.
