Septic Systems and Best Available Technologies

Introduction:Septic systems, or onsite wastewater treatment systems, are a well-established and effective tool for treating wastewater for homes, businesses, and small communities. Properly maintaining systems is important to prolong the life of the system and reduce risks to public and environmental health. This publication provides a review of septic systems, maintenance practices and discusses Best Available Technologies (BAT) as an important tool to enhance wastewater treatment. Important resources for homeowners are also provided.
