University of Maryland Extension

Breeding Program

We have maintained a small band of Thoroughbred broodmares at the Central Maryland Research and Education facility in Clarksville. Our goal is to produce quality Maryland bred horses while providing invaluable learning opportunities for our students.

Our students get to actively participate in the process from breeding, to foaling, to sale.University of Maryland students care for the mares throughout the year, and mares come to UMD’s College Park campus to foal under the watchful supervision of our Equine Reproduction class. Student interns work with the youngsters through the summer months and learn about the sale and bloodstock industry as they prep the weanlings and present them for sale each year.

Our breeding program is currently on hiatus, but we are still looking forward to foaling out privately owned mares on campus for our student's experience.
