Classes will be held at the University of Maryland Extension Office in Derwood Maryland, Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 on the following dates:

January 16, 2019 - Networking and Introductions - An open meeting discussion on the opportunities in table food and small ruminant production. Light snacks will be made available.

January 23, 2019 - Marketing Trends - Local trends in Table Food Production. Resources in Agriculture. Where are the markets, and how can one get invited to participate? Other options for selling your products.

January 30, 2019 - Weed Control Options - Weeds steal nutrients and moisture. They can harbor disease. A review of different options available for control of weeds. Using cover crops to help limit weeds. Save your moisture and your nutrients for the plants you want. What are reasonable options? With more and more weeds coming into the area, and many that are resistant to even the best weed control methods, a review of cultural, cover crops, and exclusion methods of weed control.

February 6, 2019 - Soil Micro Nutrients - The Macro Nutrients are important, but what happens when a micro nutrient is not managed. Managing soil micro nutrients, deficiency symptoms, and sources to replenish them. And Getting a Handle on Soil and Plant Nutrient Needs. Everything from Nutrient Management Regulations, Nutrient Sources and Making Sure Plants Receive What They Need in Time. Short term and long term nutrient needs. Using animal and plant by-products to meet plant nutrient needs. Understanding what can be gained by using manure, compost and organic nutrient sources. Making sure one doesn’t miss needed nutrients. What is compost, how to make it properly. Sources to get organic nutrient sources tested.

February 13, 2019 - Laws and Regulations for Agriculture - Food Safety Modernization Act basics, labor laws, minimum wage regulations. Different methods of getting the work done.

February 20, 2019 - Cover Crops for All Seasons - What can we use, winter, summer and in between crops. Keeping soil in place, building soil and building soil nutrients. How much time is needed to gain benefits from a cover crop?

February 27, 2019 - Season Extension Technologies - How to get the most from the high tunnel. Protecting the tunnel in adverse weather. Prevention of nutrient and salt buildup in the tunnel. Styles of high tunnels, raised beds, growing in the soil, cropping and rest periods.

March 6, 2019 - Ruminants, meat, milk and fiber production.

March 13, 2019 - Row Covers - How to make the best of this management tool - Everything from frost protection to insect management, but how many bags of sand can I have? Ethnic Vegetables - What is needed in the local area? What does it take to raise these vegetables?  How to market these vegetables?

March 20, 2019 - Pest Management, Newer Ideas - Using color to attract beneficial insects, and using trap crops.

March 27, 2019 - Basic Hands on Mechanics - Tools to own, basic repairs to be able to do. Oil changes, grease selection and use, fuel additives, preparing for storage, tires - liquid and air filled, basis of agricultural machinery care.
