Description/Notes:

Who should attend:  This one-day workshop is highly recommended for small- and large-scale fruit and vegetable producers who want to understand how to meet basic U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food safety requirements and/or are considering Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) certification. The training will assist with on-farm food safety implementation and writing a GAP program for both wholesale growers and direct marketers.  This Basic GAP workshop does not satisfy the FDA training requirement for the Food Safety Modernization ACT (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule... a separate Produce Safety Alliance curriculum workshop meets that requirement.

Topics covered in this Basic GAP program include highlights of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule; Good Agricultural Practices such as addressing pre-harvest and post-harvest water quality issues; an update on current food safety research; writing a food safety plan; and MDA/University of Maryland programs to assist producers in implementing GAP. A portion of the training will be spent helping producers write their food safety plans. Producers are encouraged to bring their laptops. Laptops will also be provided to those who cannot bring them.

Registration, Cost, and Location: Participants are encouraged to register online, or if you have questions or encounter difficulties registering online, please contact the Frederick County Extension office location… Lisa Strong, Frederick County Extension Administrative Assistant, by phone at 301-600-3576 or by email at  lstrong@umd.edu   … Registration is required to ensure adequate materials are available.

The workshop will take place from 8:30 am to 4 pm. The fee for the program will be $20 and will cover lunch costs and materials provided to each participant. Attendees will receive a certificate of participation following the program.

Other Programs:  The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and University of Maryland Extension (UME) conduct a series of regional food safety training workshops for fruit and vegetable producers. For the FSMA-PSA curriculum workshop, please go to the MDA Food Safety Modernization Act website at… https://mda.maryland.gov/foodfeedquality/Pages/Food-Safety-Modernization-Act.aspx
