How Do I Become A Master Gardener?

A few things to consider before applying: 

  1. Class Schedule:  Evening classes from 6:00pm to 8:45pm every Thursday night plus some Tuesday nights, and a few Saturday mornings from late January to the end of April each year. 75% attendance is required to pass the class.
  2. Location: Classes will be held at two locations the University of Maryland Extension (UME) Baltimore City office, 6615 Reisterstown Road suite 201, and at the Cylburn Arboretum, 4915 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215 
  3. When: Classes typically run from late January to late April, Thursday and some Tuesday evenings 6-9pm. This is subject to change. 
  4. Cost: A $250 fee covers the Master Gardener handbook and course related materials. Full payment is due by the first day of class.  Scholarships may be negotiated and awarded. Please contact UME BCMG Coordinator, for more information.
  5. Volunteering is the main focus of the Master Gardener Program. In your first year as a Master Gardener Intern you are asked to complete 40 hours of volunteer work.  In subsequent work to remain an Active Master Gardener, you will be asked to log 20 hours of approved volunteer work, and 10 hours of continuing education. Certification lapses after 3 years of inactivity as a volunteer.

Admission to the program is competitive and space is limited. 

Tips while enrolled for the Training Course and Becoming a Certified Master Gardener:

  • Attendance policies will be explained the first day of class. 
  • Please be on time to all classes. If you will be late or must miss a class, please notify the Master Gardener Coordinator.
  • A  final exam with a passing score of 75% is required to move from being a Master Gardener Trainee to a Master Gardener Intern.
  •  In this first year as a Master Gardener Intern, you are asked to complete 40 hours of volunteer work to become a Certified Master Gardener.  In subsequent work to remain an Active Master Gardener, you will be asked to log 20 hours of approved volunteer work, and 10 hours of continuing education.There will be a variety of opportunities throughout the year to fulfill all your volunteer hours. These are communicated via email and can be found on our internal websites.

  • Volunteer hours and must be completed and logged by December 14th annually to get certified and keep that certification Active.
