Grow It Eat It

Grow It Eat It Events, Classes, and Workshops in Baltimore City

This page is regularly updated with Grow It Eat It events hosted by the UME Baltimore City Master Gardeners - organized by series and dates within each series

The Grow It Eat It (GIEI) Program is a UME Master Gardener program that was launched in 2009 to teach Marylanders how to grow food in home, community, and school gardens. Over the past eight years, Master Gardeners (MGs) have taught hundreds of classes, developed demonstration gardens, and helped thousands of individuals and groups start their own food gardens.

If you garden in Baltimore City, or any City for that matter, raised beds are a common way to garden that increases acessibility for those who have trouble bending, and can be a solution for those who want to garden but their in-ground soil lead levels are high and risky.

According to UME's Home Garden Information Center there are many other advantages of Raised Bed gardening too:

Advantages of Raised Beds

  • Warms up quickly in spring;
  • Drains well;
  • Increases available rooting area;
  • Less compaction and erosion because you never walk in the planting area; and
  • Provides greater yields per unit area due to high fertility and increased root growth.
