The consulting and industrial professional foresters listed in this publication are willing to work with small acreage woodland owners to encourage healthy and sustainable woodlands. Each listing includes the services offered by the individual and/or company, as well as which Maryland counties they serve. The Directory is for reference only and is not an endorsement of any forester listed.
As the population of Maryland has grown, many larger parcels of land have been divided into properties ranging from 1 to 10 acres, with a mix of woodland and open land. In 2006, 85% of Maryland private woodland owners had properties from 1 to 10 acres. This is important because 78% of Maryland woodlands are privately owned. These landowners have a diverse range of objectives, including recreation, hunting, timber, wildlife habitat improvement, water quality, firewood or other forest products.
Property owners who have 1 to 10 acres often have special challenges in finding professional services for their woodlands. For example, state foresters can develop forest management plans for larger woodlands over 10 acres, but often cannot for smaller properties due to limited resources. Small-acreage owners may need the assistance of a professional forester to help them manage wildlife habitat, create stream corridors, remove invasive species, harvest or plant trees, or develop a simple forest stewardship plan to guide their activities over the next 10-15 years.
In order to assist the small-acreage woodland owner, University of Maryland Extension has developed this directory. The consulting and industrial professional foresters listed here are willing to work with small acreage woodland owners to encourage healthy and sustainable woodlands. Each listing includes the services offered by the individual and/or company, as well as which Maryland counties they serve. Interested small-acreage owners are encouraged to interview the service providers in this directory to find the right forester for their needs.
All foresters practicing within the State of Maryland, public or private, must be licensed. Each will have license number they can provide upon request. Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware do not license professional foresters, but West Virginia does.
The license requires graduation from a forestry school accredited by the Society of American Foresters with at least a Bachelor of Science degree and two years of practical experience under the guidance of a licensed forester. Foresters on this list are Licensed Professional Foresters with the State of Maryland’s Board of Foresters within the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (www.dllr.state.md.us/license/for). You can verify a license, file a complaint and find other information at the website.
Before selecting a private forester:
- Get references from other landowners who have used a licensed private forester.
- Select a few foresters from the list and talk with them about your stewardship objectives.
- Ask for references, experience, a prior job site to inspect, or client to contact. Be clear on the details of contracting, fees, etc.
- Meet at your property with one or more of the foresters with whom you feel comfortable. Some may make a brief initial visit at no charge depending on the types of services requested.
- Select a forester who understands and can fulfill your goals, provides a reasonable return on the cost of services, has good references, and has a personality compatible with yours.
Be sure to:
- Sign a written contract with the forester that spells out the services and fees.
- Communicate regularly. The forester becomes a partner in the stewardship of your land
Public Foresters (Service & Extension)
In additional to private foresters, there are two categories of public foresters in Maryland. Service foresters are employed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service and are located in each county. They provide basic information on your forest and its’ potential, management alternatives, financial incentive programs (cost-share), and programs to reduce your property taxes (woodland assessment program). For a reasonable fee, they can write a Forest Stewardship Management plan (usually on properties larger than 10 acres) and provide other services, but they cannot conduct commercial timber sales.
Extension foresters are employed by the University of Maryland Extension (UME) and provide research-based educational assistance through programs accessed at the local UME county offices, and available at the Woodland Stewardship Education website: go.umd.edu/woodland.
