A professional forester can help landowners make informed decisions that will enhance forest stewardship. Professional foresters are either private (consulting and industrial) or public (service and extension foresters).
All foresters practicing within the State of Maryland, public or private, must be licensed. Each will have a license number they can provide upon request. Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware do not license professional foresters, but West Virginia does.
The license requires graduation from a forestry school accredited by the Society of American Foresters with at least a Bachelor of Science degree and two years of practical experience under the guidance of a licensed forester. Foresters on this list are Licensed Professional Foresters with the State of Maryland’s Board of Foresters within the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (www.dllr.state.md.us/license/for). You can verify a license, file a complaint and find other information at the website.
This publication provides the contact information for consulting and industrial foresters licensed to work in Maryland. It is intended as a reference only, not as an endorsement of any forester listed. The University of Maryland Extension’s Woodland Stewardship Education program updates the information contained in this publication periodically. Check the Woodland Stewardship Education website at go.umd.edu/woodland for newer versions. It is the responsibility of the users to determine the forester best suited to their particular needs and to contract with that forester.
Private Foresters (Consulting & Industrial)
Consulting foresters provide a range of information and professional services, including developing forest stewardship plans, commercial timber sales, tree planting, and a range of services detailed for each business in this publication. They are independent, working alone or in small businesses. Consulting foresters are recommended for most landowners when conducting a timber sale. Because they are contracted and paid by you, they act as your agent, representing your interests. They usually receive a percentage of the timber sale’s revenues, or are compensated hourly or on a flat rate basis. Studies have shown that the fee paid for a consulting forester in timber sales is recovered easily in the increased price received for the timber.
Industrial foresters represent sawmills or other forest products industry and have a responsibility to the employer to supply raw wood products. Some forest industry companies provide free management services as part of their own programs and have developed long-term relationships with private woodland owners.
Before selecting a private forester:
- Get references from other landowners who have used a licensed private forester.
- Select a few foresters from the list and talk with them about your stewardship objectives.
- Ask for references, experience, a prior job site to inspect, or client to contact. Be clear on the details of contracting, fees, etc.
- Meet at your property with one or more of the foresters with whom you feel comfortable. Most will make a brief initial visit at no charge.
- Select a forester who understands and can fulfill your goals, provides a reasonable return on the cost of services, has good references, and has a personality compatible with yours.
- Sign a written contract with the forester that spells out the services and fees.
- Communicate regularly. The forester becomes a partner in the stewardship of your land.
Public Foresters (Service & Extension)
Service foresters are employed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service and are located in each county. They provide basic information on your forest and its potential, management alternatives, financial incentive programs (cost-share), and programs to reduce your property taxes (woodland assessment program). For a reasonable fee, they can write a Forest Stewardship Management plan and provide other services, but they cannot conduct commercial timber sales.
Extension foresters are employed by the University of Maryland Extension (UME) and provide research-based educational assistance through programs accessed at the local UME county offices, and available at the Woodland Stewardship Education website: go.umd.edu/woodland.
