Steps to Success – Steps for All Animal Projects in Bold:

January 1 - 4-H Registration (All 4-H Members and Volunteers) -

First Monday in January - Senior Portfolios for Leadership Trip Consideration

January 11 - Steer Weigh-In (Market Steers Only) 9am - Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds - bring Maryland 4-H Livestock Registration Form - must be completely and accurately filled out before weighing-in

February 1 - Record Books Due to 4-H Office – anyone who carried an animal project must turn in project records from the previous year in order to carry a project in the current year.

February 18 - Mandatory Livestock Meeting 6:30pm (Cattle, Goat, Poultry, Sheep, and Swine Exhibitors) – Southern High School

May 1 - Two Buyers' Names and Addresses (Market Projects Only) – Email to

May 20 - Livestock Weigh-In (Market Goats, Sheep, Hogs Only) 4-7pm – Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds

  • Maryland 4-H Livestock Registration - must be completely and accurately filled out before weighing-in
  • Buyers' Letters (All Market Projects) 
  • Committee Sign-Up 
  • Raffle Tickets - Sell to raise funds for Livestock Auction Committee projects (i.e. show ring, stalls, scale, awards, etc.) Sold and unsold tickets and money will be turned in at fair entry day

June 1  - All Animal Project Registrations Due (All Animal Projects not handed in at a weigh-in)

June 1 - Bidder Book (Market Projects Only) – Email to

  • Bio for Bidder Book
  • Photo for Bidder Book
  • Thank You to last year's buyers for Bidder Book

July 31 - Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance (AH&QA) - general (all ages) and species specific (Int & Sr)

July 31 - State Fair Online Pre-Entries Due

August 17 - County Fair Animal Online Pre-Entries Due

  • Entry Fees – mailed to 4-H Office, 97 Dairy Lane, Gambrills MD 21054
  • Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (poultry health forms due at check-in) – mailed to 4-H Office 
  • W-9 Tax Form (Market Projects Only) – mailed to 4-H Office

Summer Sales Promotion - (Market Projects Only)

Two Hours of Fair Work

  • 2nd Weekend Before Fair - Fair Barn Area Set-Up
  • Saturday Before Fair – Fair Grounds Clean-Up – 10am-1pm

September 15 - Fair Livestock Check-In 3-7pm (Poultry and Rabbits 5-7pm)

Fair Week Information Booth and Raffle Sales, 1.5 hour shift (Market Projects Only)

September 19 - 4-H Livestock Auction (Market Projects Only)

  • Food and Drink Donation for Auction Dinner
  • Auction Dinner Set-Up - 4pm
  • Pre-Auction Meeting - 5pm
  • Pictures with Animals at Auction – During Auction
  • Auction Dinner Clean-Up
  • Auction Clean-Up

September 20 - Last Fair Day

  • Buyer and Award Thank You Notes - 1-3pm (Market Projects Only)
  • Livestock Released - 6:30pm
