Somerset County The Somerset County 4-H EFNEP after school program was a tremendous success this year. We added two new sites to our existing five. We began with our "Healthy Habits, Healthy Eating" progrm by introducing the youth to basic hygiene needs such as hand washing and grooming. Next we moved into kitchen basics such as utensil identification, appliance safety, measuring and portion control. Lastly, we moved into the fun stuff....cooking. The youth made pretzels, biscuits, train mix, pizza and homemade ice cream. Here are some testimonials from the youth when they were asked to write a story about what they learned over the past year: "I learned how to cook" Pedro age 9 "Ms. Nicole told me to never, never use the stove unless an adult is with me" Alexis age 10 "Washing your hands after you use the bathroom is important so you don't get germs everywhere. Even wash your hands after you play with your pets" Destiny age 8 "I learned that it is important to have measuring cups and spoons when you cook or your food might not taste very good if you don't measure things right" Devon age 10 Overall the 2003-2004 program year was a success. The youth learned valuable lessons that they can use for a lifetime. We reached over 100 youth in county between the ages of 8-10, and they now understand the importance of being safe and clean in the kitchen.
