Program Assistant Ninety-eight (98) third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade campers participated in a nutrition education program during the Summer of Safety, Arts, and Reading (SOSAR) Camps in 2003. The campers ranged in age from 8 to 12. A one-hour nutrition activity was conducted each week at each site. Assessments were conducted with each lesson to determine the camper's nutrition knowledge in each of the lesson areas: Energy Balance; the Food Guide Pyramid; 5-A-Day; Sugar Drinks; and Fast Food Choices. A variety of assessment tools were used to conduct evaluations and the results showed knowledge gained from each lesson. The SOSAR Camps program and the nutrition education activities were successful in reaching at-risk youth and in providing positive experiences and enrichment activities that were very well received by campers and camp staff.
