The past several months I have been working with teen parents, who attend school at the Family Center. The girls range in age from 15 to 18. I often felt that I was just "spinning my wheels" and wondered if anything I said was really getting through to them. This month I found out I was. One of the girls called two weeks ahead of time to tell me she would be out of town the day I was scheduled and asked if I would save her copies of what we did that day. She had used many of the ideas and recipes I had given to her. Another one, who was graduating, asked if I would continue to work with her in her home. The parent's attending have enjoyed the programs I have taught. We are setting things up for the new students coming in September. In the meantime, I will continue working with the ones who will be attending the summer program with their children.
Our local YMCA has a building downtown that has transitionl housing for families. Every other month I do a program for current and former residents. In May we talked about fast food and watched the movie "Supersize Me". Apparently it made an impression. Two of the parents told me they have not been to a fast food restaurant since then and another said it was a once a week trip now instead of 3 or 4 times a week.
