2015 Grow It, Eat It, Preserve It workshops are sponsored by University of Maryland Extension, Baltimore County. Handouts, fruits/vegetables, lids, jars, and use of canning equipment are all supplied with your registration fee.

Baltimore County is proud to offer it’s first food preservation, with the goal of offering continuing food preservation classes throughout the late spring-fall of 2015.

Looking ahead to 2015…
If you own a pressure canner with a dial gauge you can have the gauge tested for FREE right here at the Baltimore Co. office. Just call or email and make an appointment with Shauna Henley.

Classes offered in 2015…
Late spring and summer, food preservation classes to be offered but not limited to:

  • Jams & Jellies
  • Pressure canning vegetables
  • Tomatoes
  • Fruit

Typical Class Schedule

Class lecture, followed by participants going into the kitchen to make their own canned produce that they will take home that day!

A $35 fee includes So Easy to Preserve, lecture/instruction, and all the equipment and produce to process your own preserved jar.

Class Goals:
The food preservation classes are intended to provide a hands on learning experience for beginners and advanced canners.

This course is aimed at introducing the food science principles of high and/or low acid foods to be preserved, as well as the knowledge to safely can to prevent botulism.

For advanced canners this class provides them with the updated science, resources, and tools that may not have been available when they first started canning.

Who teaches this class?

Your instructor is Dr. Shauna Henley. Shauna holds a PhD in Biology with a focus on human nutrition and consumer food safety. She is Servsafe certified by the state of Maryland, and has been trained by her colleagues.

Shauna is the Family & Consumer Science educator for the northern cluster (Baltimore Co., Harford Co., Carroll Co., and Baltimore city). She is looking forward to meeting her community!
