FREDERICK COUNTY AGRICULTURE WEEK

The Frederick County Agriculture Week will be held on February 16-21, 2015 at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, Maryland with the theme of “Farmers Supporting Families in Frederick County”.  Many displays and events are being planned for this year and changes have been made to the schedule and times of events.  If you have any questions concerning Frederick County Ag Week or your business or organization would like to place a display at the mall, please contact Ted Albaugh at 240-446-3054 or at dayslandacres1@comcast.net or Ronald Murphy at 301-788-3847 or at rwm186@hotmail.com   Exhibits may be set up on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. 

Activities currently planned are: 

Coloring contest – A coloring picture and entry form will be printed in the Frederick News Postprior to Ag Week. Coloring pages will be accepted at the Frederick County 4-H Display next to Littman Jewelers on Monday Feb. 16th from 10 am – 7 pm. All entries will be judged and displayed on Tuesday in the 4-H area. Prizes will be awarded for 3 age categories. Novice (3 years and under), Juniors (4 yrs – 7 years) and Older Youth (8 years and up). Monday, February 16, 2015 – Ice Cream Making Contest (RESCHEDULED for Wednesday due to inclement weather) Registration will begin from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the entrance near DSW Shoes and churning will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Groups will need to supply their own hand crank freezer, floor covering, supplies, (no eggs to be used in recipe), salt, ice, etc., along with a copy of the ice cream recipe for the judging (space will be limited, so individuals may have to take turns churning for their group). Groups will also need to supply ice cream for those in attendance and will be required to clean up their area after churning.  The Frederick County Dairy Princess and Dairy Maids will be assisting with the ice cream churning and distribution.  Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 

Tuesday, February 17, 2015 – The annual Marcie Becker Cake and Pie Contest and Auction will be held on near center court.  Please bring your cake or pie to the center court at 6:00-6:30 p.m.  An auction of all baked items will start at 7:30 p.m.  John Roop of Roop Auction Service will serve as the auctioneer that evening.

Wednesday, February 18, 2015 – Mike Dickson of the Seeds of Life Nurseries will host various demonstrations and events at center court from 6:00-8:00 p.m. 

Thursday, February 19, 2015 – The Frederick County 4-H Robotics Club (Robo Rangers) will be conducting various demonstrations and building events at center stage from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Friday, February 20, 2015 – The Roy Porter Memorial Log Sawing Contest will be held at the Shenk & Tittle Store (tentative location) beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Contestants will be judged on time and will be limited to a boys team and girls team from each FFA Chapter in Frederick County. A monetary prize will be awarded to the FFA Chapter with the winning boys team and the winning girls team.

The Frederick County Dairy Princess Committee will be constructing a Giant Ice Cream Sundae that evening at Center Court at 7:30 pm.  Ice cream will be provided by Rocky Point Creamery and the Frederick County Dairy Princess and Dairy Maids will be assisting with the construction of the sundae.

Saturday, February 21, 2015 - The Frederick County Sheep Breeders Association will be having demonstrations from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and the Frederick County 4-H Entomology Club will be having a display of insects between 1:00-5:00 p.m. 

Also on Saturday from 2:00-4:00 p.m., the 4-H Tailwaggers Dog Club will have demonstrations with 4-H animals and hold a question and answer session.  A demonstration by Scales and Tails will be presented at 6:00 p.m. near the center court and the annual Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull will be held at 7:00 p.m. in front of the DSW store, with registration beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Adult Volunteers- If you would like to volunteer a few hours during the day to represent 4-H and hand out 4-H info please contact Lisa at lstrong@umd.edu or 301-600-1595 to sign up. 

Many agriculture organizations and businesses will be having displays during Ag Week at the Mall and can display old scrapbooks, etc.  Donations from the fountain at center court during Ag Week at the Mall will go towards expenses of the Frederick County Ag Week at the Mall. 

All displays and exhibits must be submitted between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2015, unless prior approval of the Ag Week Committee is received; any organizations bringing machinery should check with the Ag Week Committee on times and all exhibits MUST remain until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015.  No machinery exhibits will be removed until after the mall closes on Saturday, February 21, 2015.  Exhibits must be picked up by 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21 or they will be considered abandoned and removed from the property; all machinery exhibits must have plastic on the floor under the oil pan, and cardboard or carpet under the tires and jack.  NO STEEL WHEELS; booths and exhibits should be kept neat and clean all week.  The Chairman of each activity must make sure activities are cleaned up; no vehicles will be allowed in the mall unless approved by the Ag Week Committee and raffles must be approved by the Ag Week Committee and proper permits obtained.
